Statement on the Vancouver Aquarium Pause

By August 31, 2020No Comments

The Aquarium and Oceanwise are an institution in Vancouver. Like many tourist attractions, COVID-19 has had a major impact on ticket sales, which has caused their revenue to fall by nearly 80%.

Their Board of Directors have taken the prudent and proactive step of pausing their programming while they re-tool their operations to reflect the new COVID-19 reality.

Ocean Wise Conservation Association’s other conservation initiatives—including Ocean Wise Research, Ocean Wise Education, Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, Arctic programs, Ocean Wise Seafood, Marine Mammal Rescue, and others—will continue without interruption. I am pleased to share that more than 75 specialists (biologists, veterinarians, etc.) will be on hand to care for the Aquarium’s over 70,000 creatures during this pause.

Our government is here to support the workers impacted by this decision, and as always, I invite anyone who needs help accessing these programs to contact my office at (604) 666-0135 or hedy.fry@parl.gc.ca.

It’s a tough day for these folks, but we will get through this together.
