Liberal Health critic Dr. Hedy Fry made the following statement today on the release of the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Mental Health Strategy for Canada:
“We welcome today’s much-anticipated Mental Health Strategy for Canada.
This strategy, which is the result of hard work from the Commission, stakeholders and citizens across Canada, confirms what Liberals have been saying all along – that Canada is facing a growing mental health crisis and...
Talking Suicide, Advocacy, and Politics with the Honourable Dr. Fry

The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Health
Health Canada
70 Colombine Driveway, Tunney’s Pasture
Ottawa, ON K1A 0K9
Dear Minister Aglukkaq,
We write to you today to convey our deep concern over your decision to systematically cut spending on Aboriginal health as part of the planned reduction in departmental spending identified in this year’s budget. We are particularly concerned that funding for essential health promotion and disease prevention programs and services, as well as health research, has been reduced to the point where it will have a significant impact on the ability of Health Canada to fully deliver its mandate to improve First Nations and Inuit health...
MONTREAL- Liberal Public Safety critic Francis Scarpaleggia made the following statement today on the Supreme Court of Canada's decision to strike down a law that allows police to tap telephones without a warrant in an emergency:
"The Supreme Court's decision sends a signal, and a warning, to the Harper government in relation to its recently-introduced on-line surveillance legislation, Bill C-30.
In essence, the Court has said in today's decision that it considers Canadians' privacy rights to be sacrosanct, and that the government must properly protect these rights, including in regard to warrantless access to internet subscriber information."
The Liberal Party of Canada will launch a petition today inviting Canadians to demand that the Harper Conservatives tell the truth about the F-35.
“This Prime Minister and his government have been misleading Canadians in order to conceal their complete and utter mismanagement of the biggest military procurement in our country’s history,” said Liberal Leader Bob Rae. “Canadians want honesty and accountability from Stephen Harper not excuses and cover-ups. It’s time that this Conservative government take responsibility for this fiasco and come clean.”
The petition calls on Stephen Harper to tell the truth about...
Liberals Call on Government to Restore Funding to Katimavik
OTTAWA— The Conservative government’s defunding of Katimavik ignores the group’s tremendous service to Canada’s youth and must be immediately reversed, said Liberal Youth, Amateur Sport and Post-Secondary Education critic Justin Trudeau today.
“As a former chair of the Board, I know the tremendous work that Katimavik does and how it helps...
Ottawa, ON - Vancouver Centre Liberal MP and Health Critic, Hedy Fry, today denounced the federal budget that does nothing to create long-term jobs and harms the CBC and our environment.
“Given that there has been almost no new jobs created in the last six months, the Conservative government should have focused on long-term, sustainable job creation. They could have found billions of dollars to invest in long-term...
President Efthymiou, colleagues, as always it's a pleasure to speak with you on the subject of gender equality.
It is important that we continue to explore and raise awareness of gender issues.
So, I want to share with you some thoughts about a theme I will be exploring for my Annual Report in the Summer Session
First, however, I want to update you on what's been going on at the OSCE. A decision was made by the Ministerial Council in Vilnius, concerning gender, which echoes what we resolved as...

Is this the end of Canadian medicare?
Stephen Harper once said ‘you won’t recognize Canada when I get through with it.’ It seems he’s starting with medicare.
By LIBERAL MP HEDY FRY | Feb. 06, 2012
PARLIAMENT HILL—The Conservative government’s announcement that it would impose cuts in federal health transfers after 2017, came as a shock to provincial premiers and health-care groups, who had been calling for a first ministers meeting on health care for more than a year. They were united in their condemnation of the unilateral nature of the decision and the subsequent refusal of the...
