Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement today on the death of the former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Lincoln Alexander:
“Ontario and Canada have lost a great public servant. Arlene and I have also lost a personal friend.
Lincoln Alexander, or 'Linc', as he was known to everyone, served his country in so many ways - his booming voice, passionate advocacy, great spirit, wonderful humour, and sense of fun and occasion, will be cherished and remembered by Canadians everywhere.

Liberal Health critic Dr. Hedy Fry made the following statement today on Prostate Cancer Awareness Week:

"This week is Prostate Cancer Awareness Week. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian men. Over 25,000 new cases will be diagnosed and over 4,000 men will die this year in Canada alone.

Liberal Statement on World Suicide Prevention Day

VANCOUVER— Liberal Health critic Dr. Hedy Fry made the following statement today on World Suicide Prevention Day:

“Suicide is a preventable tragedy that has touched every Canadian in some way. This is why in the autumn of 2011, Liberals launched a day of action on suicide prevention, designed to raise awareness and call for the creation of a National Suicide Prevention Strategy in partnership with the provinces, territories, First Nations, Inuit, Métis and other stakeholders.

Though the Liberal motion received Conservative support, it has been a year and the government has failed to act to prevent this tragic loss of life. Instead it has cut funding to Canadian Forces suicide prevention and post-traumatic stress disorder programs, as well as to Aboriginal youth suicide prevention, despite the fact that both these groups have very high suicide rates.

On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary caucus, I urge the government to initiate a comprehensive and effective National Suicide Prevention Strategy. I encourage all Canadians to help remove the stigma of...
