Fry applauds Trudeau’s real change plan to fix Parliament and democracy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, ON – The Honourable Dr. Hedy Fry, P.C., Liberal MP for Vancouver Centre, today applauded Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s announcement to fix Canada’s broken democratic system. The 32-point, comprehensive plan, will deliver real change from reforming our electoral system, to strengthening Elections Canada, to making evidence-based policy, and giving a greater voice to Canadians in their Parliament.

“Today, Justin Trudeau presented a plan for real change. We will restore openness and transparency and modernize the way government works,” said Fry. “Our comprehensive plan focuses on more transparent government; giving Canadians a voice in Ottawa, open and fair elections, evidence-based policy, and better service for Canadians.”

The Liberal plan will raise the bar on transparency and accountability, while modernizing the way government works by implementing measures including requiring that government data and information is open by default, giving Canadians a voice in Ottawa by allowing more independence for MPs and government watchdogs, ending partisanship in the Senate, ensuring open and fair elections by moving forward with electoral reform, strengthening Elections Canada and banning partisan government advertising, making evidence-based decisions on programs and policies, providing better and more timely services to Canadians with a more inclusive and engaging policy-making process, and including an equal number of women and men in a Liberal Cabinet.

“Our plan builds on measures we have already implemented – like our leadership on the proactive disclosure of parliamentarians’ expenses and removing Senators from the Liberal Caucus – but it also moves far beyond. Canadians know that Ottawa is broken. We have a sweeping agenda for change at the heart of which is a simple idea: transparent government is good government,” concluded Fry.
