I would like to extend my deep appreciation to the security personnel who kept us safe in Centre Block of Parliament today. While they rushed us to safety, they ran headlong toward danger. They displayed the kind of bravery, fearlessness, and professionalism that each and every Canadian can be proud of. While chaos was unfolding outside, we felt secure, and I am grateful.
Thank you to Prime Minister Harper for your address to Canadians tonight. In this, there is no partisanship. In this, we are all together, working to strengthen our security while maintaining our proud democracy. Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada have offered the government our absolute support as we seek to prosecute those responsible for this attack, and prevent events like it from happening in the future. The gist of my intervention focused on human rights abuses against women and young girls in Syria. Perhaps the most heinous practice by jihadists and Islamic extremist groups who flourish under the Assad regime is the use of rape as a strategy of terrorism.
